Working Groups

Impact Capital Forum’s mission is to advance the microfinance, impact, and social enterprise sectors by providing a platform for innovation, collaboration, and thought leadership. As a field-building platform, the Impact Capital Forum facilitates dialogue as well as action. Towards this end, for certain influential and fast-evolving impact themes, we bring together ‘working groups’, which grow out of Impact Capital Forum events. The working groups continue the dialogue, sharing news and expertise virtually and meeting in-person and online on a recurring schedule.

Our inaugural working group is dedicated to 'Opportunity Zones'.

To participate in this working group, first keep an eye on our home page for upcoming Opportunity Zone working group sessions and expert panels. If none are currently available, please write info@impactcapitalforum.org with the subject ‘OZ Working Group’ to be informed of the next announced meeting date.

What are Opportunity Zones?

Opportunity Zones have emerged as a transformative economic development tool, providing a new incentive to place much-needed capital into distressed communities. They also offer investors opportunities to defer and/or reduce their tax liabilities when committing capital to designated zones in the US. A helpful guide to Opportunity Zone investing is here.

How will the working group operate?

The working group will interact to clarify the law and its application and facilitate opportunities for members and their organizations. Each session we will target a different aspect of Opportunity Zones. The group is relevant to: foundations, financial institutions, impact investing intermediaries, fund managers, investors, attorneys, advisors and real estate developers.

Our first meeting was held in January 2019.  Impact Capital Forum thanks Orrick - law firm and leading advisor to the Technology, Energy & Infrastructure, and Financial sectors globally - for hosting the Opportunity Zones Investing working group.

The Opportunity Zones working group is complemented by expert panel events, open to the public, particularly when new advisories are made available. See, for example, ICF's OZ event on May 7, 2019.
